Somalia - Enforcing the Dismissal of Female Employees in Humanitarian Organizations
(Wednesday, October 07, 2009)
The Islamist Somali Youth Movement demanded from national and international humanitarian organizations that operate in areas under its control in Central and Southern Somalia to dismiss all female employees within the next 3 months, except females working in hospitals and health centers. A statement sent to all NGOs in these regions also asked them to refrain from advocating Christian, secular and democratic values, as well as any values that contradict the teachings of Islam. The Youth Movement also banned the establishment of women organizations and celebrating the international women's day.
